How to name the venue?
i think it is useful to discuss the name of the venues.
there are different names for one venue, for example:
the olympic stadium in munich:
Olympiastadion, München, Germany
Olympiastadion, Munich, Germany
the first is the german version (except germany), the second uses the english name of munich.
what do you think?
should the venues be named by there local names or should we use the english name?
Another point is the United kingdom. should there be used united kingdom as the country or use the origin country names like england, ireland?
see “Venues” section in http://www.setlist.fm/guidelines

Ack, hit "post" too soon...
Meant to say that this is the naming standard at another setlist site I help with.

I would have to agree with leglessmoof.

I think the venue name should be as it was named when the concert took place.
In other words, any concerts at Niedersachsenstadion (before it was renamed AWD Arena) should have Niedersachsenstadion as the venue name.

i have another point for discussion about the venue names:
how to handle venues which has been renamed but where still the same venues?
For example:
Niedersachsenstadion in Hanover is now called AWD Arena
or
The Volksparkstadion in Hamburg has been renamed to AOL Arena and is now called HSH Nordbank Arena. What do you think about it? Should the name be the actual name?

Everyone has raised good points so far.
Just want to add my opinion about the usage of large vs. smaller suburbs.
I prefer to be as accurate as possible, and saying that, for example, The Palace of Auburn Hills (which is its correct name) is in Detroit just looks silly. Another venue in that area, the DTE Energy Music Theatre is in Clarkston, which is actually about 45 miles from Detroit. Using the bigger cities in place of the real locations is something I'd prefer not to do.

Saying Ireland is part of the UK is a bad mistake to make. Being Irish I'll tell you its a raw nerve :) As its an English language website I vote for the names being in English.

Also, would be nice to have this "rules" in the guideline.

In my opinion. All you have the right to be agree or not.
I think Countries and Cities name should be in English, since all content is in that language. In other hand, venues should be in their original lenguage to avoid confusions or bad translations.

Good points, both of you.
We know there's room for improvement - so far we followed the (inofficial) guideline of adding the local name e.g. München for Munich and Wien for Vienna ... but we're not 100% sure about that. I for myself often wondered about the suburb stuff and also the Olympic Stadium ... we're definitely gonna discuss that, taking all your points into consideration and post our findings in this forum (and hope for your input then ;-))
as for now:
* use the countries and not United Kingdom. E.g. Royal Albert Hall, London, England ... and to the lad who opened this topic: I have to add here that Ireland isn't UK ;-)
* don't add United States or USA for venues in the US, just add the state abbreviation e.g. Candlestick Park, San Francisco, CA or Carnegie Hall, New York, NYcheers

hey leglessmoof,
that's good to read, that i'm not the only one who is a little bit confused about the venues. i hope we'll have a good discussion about this topic, which will lead us to standard results, if it's possible.
i opened this topic because i mostly used the versions with german name of venue and city and the english version of the country. this mixture is quite terrible and i think for users from outside germany it would be harder to find concerts in münchen or köln than in munich or cologne. in this point i would prefer the english variant for the venues.I also concluded the venus in england, scotland,... as united kingdom, when one user spotlighted me to this point. i think it's better to name each country instead of UK, because it might be more detailed. this could be positive if there are cities i.e. in scotland and england with the same name.
regarding to the local city names issue i would prefer using the large city names, because they are more established for users from different countries. the forum in LA and the forum in Inglewood were two different venues until i read your comment. inglewood is not well known in germany :-).
a admin-tool to moderate venue names would be very nice, but instead of removing venues from the database, perhaps it's possible to create a link between 2 or more venues. this could lead to the luxury, that you can search for the forum in inglewood and retrieve all setlists from concerts in "The Forum" in inglewood and LA?

Good points.
Regarding the example you gave with Olympiastadion, not only do we have to worry about the city name but also the venue name, i.e.
Olympiastadion, München, Germany
Olympiastadion, Munich, Germany
Olympic Stadium, München, Germany
Olympic Stadium, Munich, GermanyRegarding the United Kingdom issue, according to Wikipedia, "The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy and unitary state consisting of four countries: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales." I myself have been using United Kingdom for all the setlists that I added. But it seems like it might make more sense to use the country names. I don't really care one way or the other, we just need to decide on a standard.
Another issue is spelling of certain words like Theater vs. Theatre (also applies to Amphitheater vs. Amphitheatre). The correct spelling in the U.S. is "theater" but a lot of venues purposefully use the "theatre" spelling. Do we want to make a rule that says all venues should use the "theater" spelling even if the venue purposefully uses "theatre"? Or should we handle it on a venue-by-venue basis, i.e. some venues are spelled "theater" and others are spelled "theatre"?
Yet another issue is local city names. Many venues are often associated with a large city but they are actually located in the suburbs. Some examples are The Forum (Los Angeles/Inglewood), DTE Energy Music Theatre (Detroit/Clarkston), The Palace (Detroit/Auburn Hills), etc.
And lastly, it would be nice to have a way to moderate venue names so we could remove all the incorrect venue names from the setlist.fm database.
